ASD is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by a range of challenges in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors. It encompasses a spectrum of symptoms and severity levels, making each individual’s experience unique. It is imperative to understand and support individuals with ASD by recognizing their diverse strengths and challenges, fostering a supportive environment, and promoting inclusive practices in education and society.
WHAT IS AN ASD ASSESSMENT?
Dr. Heid Escoto is an expert in the assessment and diagnosis of ASD in toddlers through adults and has over 23 years of experience. ASD assessments include a comprehensive biopsychosocial from a parent or loved one, adaptive measures, general behavioral measures, ASD-specific measures, and the administration of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2). The ADOS-2 is a semi-structured play interaction designed to elicit the types of behaviors associated with ASD. It is considered to be the “gold standard” diagnostic tool in the ASD scientific community. If the assessment is conducted via telehealth, then other ASD specific assessments are also used.
