MEDITATION PREPARATION…
To modify any behavior, it is always a good idea to prepare your environment first. In the words of Marie Kondo, “The space we create for ourselves defines our experiences and influences our well-being.” So, while you can mediate anywhere, it is wise to create a meditation space for yourself at home conducive to that which you wish to obtain…harmony and balance.
Here are some tips to help you get off to a good start….
â—¦Use natural light whenever possible.
â—¦Bring in nature with plants (fake or real is up to you)!
â—¦Cozy it up with meditation pillows, blankets, candles, etc.
â—¦Make sure to switch off your cell phones before entering your mediation room, or you can leave it out of the space.
â—¦It is advisable not to eat or drink anything in your meditation space.
â—¦Request your family members not to utilize the meditation area for any kind of other busy activities. Get creative and make a sign hang on your door.
â—¦Let members in your house know that you are not to be disturbed unless it is an emergency.
â—¦Prevent using artificial perfumes and fragrances. Using mild and natural scents helps you to calm and focus on meditation. Scents like sandalwood or lavenderwould be great.
â—¦You can burn incense. Your body will begin to associate the smell of the incense you burn with the silence of meditation and, as soon as you light it, your physiology will start to settle down.
◦To meditate, sit down comfortably in an upright position and close our eyes. It’s okay to move or shift your body during meditation if you need to.
â—¦Use a timer. Start small if you need and work your way up when possible.
There are many meditation apps you can utilize to not only meditate but connect with others around the world who share a common goal. I am a teacher on Insight Timer app and have found it a great resource not only to use for meditation but listen to talks, try different kinds of yoga, and connect to others.
